Hello, I have a WD 'My Passport' external USB drive that I connect as a backup for my system. The problem I'm having is that the drive keeps disappearing randomly. Sometimes I have to unplug it and re-plug it in 3 or 4 times before my computer recognizes it. I've tried several USB ports, and still have the same problem. The hard drive itself doesn't have a shut off switch, so it takes its cues from the computer power management system. When I plug the device in, sometimes the drive doesn't mount, but the power light on the drive will turn on. Why is it randomly turning on and off?

Apr 17, 2011 - Western digital my passport external drive keeps ejecting. Not on my work computer, my iMac or my friends tower, ONLY on my MacPro.
And why do I sometimes have to plug and unplug the device several times before it correctly recognizes it as a hard drive (with all its data in tact)? Though my other USB devices do not randomly disappear while running, they often take three or four plug ins and plug outs before they're recognized in the first place. How can I fix this, as I need a reliable backup drive always hooked up.

Hi, this seems like this topic is dead for a while, but I had a similar problem with a WD Elements 5TB in Windows 10 that I bought one month ago.
So I noted the disconnections since day one of utilization and I started looking for solutions online. Most of the pointed ways of resolution were in the energy management or driver update areas, but nothing seemed to solve my problem until I found by accident this tiny application that works like a charm: hxxp://keepalivehd.codeplex.com. I tried several time configurations (settled for '1 minute') and my HD never disconnected again. Hardware & Devices Hey, Windows 7 x86 I've got an USB External Hard Disk Drive (Samsung S2 Portable 500 Gb).
In the last 3-4 days it keeps randomly disconnecting when in use. So, Windows starts, it runs fine for an hour or so (in use), then the magic sound strikes. After a couple of seconds it's detected.
Hardware & Devices First, sorry if I'm a little slow with some of this as I'm moderate with my computer knowledge. Earlier today I had 517 gb of memory available in the C drive. I restarted my computer earlier today and once it restarted I saw I was down to 1.84 gb. I ran crap cleaner already and did a quick scan. Performance & Maintenance I have 3 drives in my system. Boot Drive 2TB WD Black Caviar 3TB Hitachi Deskstar The 2TB will come & go. Sometimes its there, sometimes it's not.
I have replaced the HD (it used to be a Hitachi), replaced cables, changed drive letter and even replaced the motherboard to no avail. Hardware & Devices ok so, the last 2 weeks at random intervals. My D (back up) drive has been just disappearing and the only way to get it back is to restart.
The only time you notice is when a file cannot be found or if you look in my computer. The Device Manager does not show anything either, even after a.
